PlayStation Vita review

By Gadget News | At 2:41 AM | Label : , , , | 0 Comments
There’s no denying that all eyes are on the Sony PlayStation Vita at present. Most look on with eager anticipation, but some are more cynical. While it managed to shift over 70 million units worldwide, there’s a common, if not entirely founded belief that its forebear, the PSP, was a flop. Its proprietary game discs, UMDs, were as welcome as WMDs, and as soon as the smartphone became more widespread, offering cheaper and plentiful gaming alternatives, many labelled it an expensive also-ran.

Even the latest of Nintendo’s portable devices, the 3DS, has been less spectacularly received both critically and publicly than its predecessors. And this has led many analysts and manufacturers to believe that dedicated handheld games consoles, in an age of 10-inch tablets and app stores with millions of games available from69p, has had its day.

They are idiots. They haven’t seen the PS Vita, clearly.
The problem with touchscreen tablets and smartphones is that they are exactly that: touchscreen. While they are great for casual gaming, offering a perfect control system to manipulate birds and cartoon catapults, they are next to useless with fast speed action games. Angry Birds and Cut The Rope? Fine. Virtua Tennis? You’re having a laugh.

Tiny gadgets: World’s smallest functional digital camera from Hammacher Schlemmer

By Gadget News | At 5:44 PM | Label : , , | 0 Comments
You may be fooled by the below picture in thinking that this can no way be an actual working digital camera, it looks way too tiny and in fact some what plastic, but ladies and gents, this is indeed a fully functional camera.

Hammacher Schlemmer recently launched this tiny device claiming it to be the world’s smallest. Indeed looking at its dimensions of 1 1/8″ L x 1″ W x 1 1/16″ D and a weight of just 14 grams (0.5 oz), its hard to find anything smaller. Equipped with automatic focus, it uses a 2 MP image sensor that takes still images at 1600 x 1200 resolution and captures video at 30 fps at 640 x 480 resolution. Images are taken as JPEGs and videos as AVIs, both saved onto its 2 GB microSD card (supports up to 32 GB cards).
Due to its size though, you will need to compromise for a relatively short battery life of just half an hour, though this can be replenished via USB in double that time. The tiny, world’s smallest camera can be yours for $99.95, a nice idea for this Christmas if you happen to know someone who is a complete nutter about all things spy related.

Nokia Lumia 800 high-end big brother

By Gadget News | At 6:29 AM | Label : , , , | 0 Comments

On a day that sees the Nokia Lumia 800 launch to expectant, and excited, Nokia fans, it's been reported that the head of Nokia France, Paul Amsellem, has let slip of a future higher-end Nokia Lumia handset.
Speaking with French paper, LesEchos, the Nokia boss was explaining how Nokia was hoping to boost its share of the French market to somwhere near its 2009 share of 25 per cent; currently the French Nokia smartphone market share stands at 16 per cent.

Whilst doing this, excitement clearly got the better of him, when he made an analogy of the Lumia 800 being like a BMW 5 series, and suggesting there will be a 7 series coming soon.
"It’s just the equivalent of the BMW 5 Series. We will soon have a full range with a Series 7 and Series 3."
Presumably the Series 3 comes in the guise of the Nokia Lumia 710.
There have been rumours flying around for a while regarding a third Nokia Lumia handset, called the Nokia Ace, and likely specs include a 4.3-inch AMOLED screen, 8-megapixel AutoFocus camera with Carl Zeiss lens, 1.4Ghz single core processor, HSPA+ connectivity for faster surfing and downloading, 16GB of storage and an 1800mAh battery.
From what we've seen of the Nokia Lumia 800, it's the screen that really stands out, so we're hoping that the larger screens size of this possible new Lumia doesn't affect the quality too much.
As a rather interesting aside Amsellem also confirmed that Nokia will have a tablet runningWindows 8 by June 2012. So Nokia is definitely planning on moving into the tablet market. This could be Nokia's big chance in producing a very stylish product that might attract a whole new customer base to a brand new OS.

Nokia 900 turns up in developer video

By Gadget News | At 6:28 AM | Label : , , , , | 0 Comments

The rumoured Nokia Ace, which should become the Nokia Lumia 900, looks to have had a speculative confirmation by way of an advert, targeting developers and attempting entice them to the new Nokia hardware and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS.
The phone, that will be the big brother of the Nokia Lumia 800, looks to be pretty sleek with curved edges top and bottom and the screen looks big - big enough to confirm earlier reports of a 4.3-inch screen.
Other possible specs include an 8-megapixel AutoFocus camera with Carl Zeiss lens, 1.4Ghz single core processor, HSPA+ connectivity for faster surfing and downloading, 16GB of storage and an 1800mAh battery.
We have to say that the very fact we're writing rumour/pre-launch stories like this about Nokia is testament to its resurgence. The Lumia 800 is an excellent handset, so let's hope Nokia continues its form with the next in the series.

Sony NEX-7 New design

By Gadget News | At 6:23 AM | Label : , , | 0 Comments

Faced front-on and the NEX-7 doesn’t look altogether different from the rest of the NEX family. Flip this baby round and it’s a whole different story: the NEX-7 features a dual thumbwheel-like set of controls to the rear. There’s an AF/MF & AEL switch and button added to the usual array of a rotational d-pad and twin function buttons. A built-in pop-up flash is discreetly tucked away on top, next to which is a Sony/Minolta hotshoe fitting. Next to this - and we’re almost out of physical space - and Sony’s managed to cram in a 100% field-of-view OLED electronic viewfinder.

Cramming is certainly the name of the game, and the NEX-7 feels somewhat busy because of this. The decision to place the one-touch movie button on a raised outer edge to the rear makes it a prime target for accidental pressing and, therefore, unwanted movie recording. The same can be said for the thumbwheel-like controls.
We say "thumbwheel-like", as they’re rather different to the sort of design you’d find on a DSLR camera; these are a far bulkier set of wheels. The decision to place them side by side feels a little strange in use, plus they’re loose and therefore very easy to knock and accidentally during shooting which leads to unwanted exposure compensation adjustment and lots of frustration.
The d-pad can have its left, right and centre buttons customised to suit your needs that, in addition to the two other function buttons, is an essential to get the most out of the camera. Still no sign of a mode dial though which, frankly, is sheer insanity as the in-camera virtual menus, as with the 5N and C3, is as baffling as ever.
The NEX-7’s been bold by strapping all manner of controls to the body, but hasn’t made much use of the camera’s front and this makes the design feel busied to its detriment - simply because it’s too easy to knock dials and buttons in use when you don’t want to.

Nikon D800 pictures leak, specs still sketchy

By Gadget News | At 6:21 AM | Label : , , | 0 Comments

The Nikon D800 is on the horizon if pictures emerging on the Internet are to be believed. The front and rear images, albeit with names and numbers obscured, claim to be of the new Nikon D800.

The Nikon D800 looks like an update or replacement for the Nikon D700, which was launched way back in 2008. Camera manufacturers being creatures of habit, there is a compelling reason to think these are legitimate. The Nikon D700 is an FX model, full frame, sitting on the professional side of Nikon's DSLR offering.
The rumoured specs for the new Nikon D800 include a 36-megapixel sensor giving you images up to 7360 x 4912 pixels. Also on the rumour list is the Expeed 3 processor, as recently seen in Nikon's new Nikon 1 cameras.
The camera is pictured with a battery grip which would be an accessory (unlike the integrated approach on the D3 models), so it's suggested that the Nikon D800 will be smaller and lighter than the D700, which would follow the trend of other recent DSLR updates.
The rear display is listed simply as larger than 3-inches and the viewfinder to give you 100% field of view, along with the combination of CF and SD card slots.
Video is highlighted, claiming to be "better than the D3s", with a range of Full HD capture modes and formats.
We don't have a date for the launch of the new Nikon D800 camera, but Nikon are going to have to move fast if this is going to be a 2011 release. Previous rumours suggested a price range of around £2400, which fits with the D700's original launch price.

Fujifilm X-S1 bridge camera hitting UK February 2012

By Gadget News | At 6:17 AM | Label : , , | 0 Comments

Fujifilm has introduced a third model into its X-series of cameras. The Fujifilm X-S1 is a bridge camera that features a Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens and the same EXR sensor technology as the brand's X10 compact.

The fixed lens itself offers a range of 24-624mm (35mm equivalent), and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. It is coupled with Fujifilm’s proprietary Intelligent Digital Zoom, that claims to double the focal range without a drop in picture quality. That means that it is possible to zoom up to a boasted 1,248mm.
It is made up of 17 glass elements, including four aspherical elements and two ED lenses, and metal cams. And the lens' aperture is made up of nine blades, which Fujfilm states, offers "excellent bokeh effect photography".
The sensor is of a 12-megapixel EXR CMOS variety, while the EXR processor, promises a minimal shutter lag of just 0.01sec, with a high speed continuous shooting capability bolted on for good measure.
The X-S1 is also capable of 1080p video capture, at 30 frames per second and with stereo sound.
Around the back, the camera sports a 3-inch LCD screen, with 460,000 pixel resolution, while the electronic viewfinder is 0.47-inch with 1.44 million pixels.
A full range of shooting functions is on offer (program/aperture-priority/shutter-priority/manual), and it is capable of shooting in RAW format.
There's also optical image stabilisation on board, along with a 360-degree Motion Panorama mode. Its Lithium battery provides up to 500 shots per charge.
The Fujifilm X-S1 will be out in the UK from February 2012 for £699.

Samsung tops Apple in global smartphone sales

By Gadget News | At 2:40 AM | Label : , , , , , | 0 Comments
Gadget News | Apps GadgetsSamsung has overtaken Apple in worldwide smartphone sales in Q3 2011. According to researchers Strategy Analytics, the South Korean company sold more than 10 million more devices than its nearest rival in the period from July to September.

With no new handset on sale, and customers tired of waiting for the iPhone 4S, Apple shifted 17.1 million devices globally in that quarter, giving it a 14.6 per cent market share, while Samsung sold 27.8 million smartphones, commanding a massive 23.8 per cent market.
Surprisingly, perhaps, Nokia was the third biggest smartphone supplier in Q3. Its sale were just shy of Apple's at 16.8 million, giving the Finnish company a 14.4 per cent share of the smartphone market, even before the Lumia 800, its first Windows Phone 7 handset, was announced.
The rest of the mobile phone manufacturers, including HTC, LG and Motorola, sold 55.3 million smartphones between them.
In total handset sales, including feature phones, Apple also fell behind, with Nokia topping the list with 27 per cent of the market, Samsung second with 22.6 per cent, LG third with 5.4 per cent, and Chinese manufacturer ZTE pipping the Cupertino giant with 4.7 per cent. With no new handset on offer, Apple only held 4.4 per cent worldwide market share.
Of course, not only will the successful launch of the iPhone 4S (more pre-orders than ever before) alter the landscape for Q4, but it must be remembered that Apple only releases one new device a year, while Samsung, while bolstered by excellent sales for the Galaxy S II, has many on the market, at a range of price points.
Perhaps the most surprising thing, therefore, is the absence of HTC in the top three.
What do you think is the reason behind Apple's slight dip? And why is HTC missing? Let us know in the comments below...

Dual SIM iPhone 4S with the Vooma Peel PG920

By Gadget News | At 2:38 AM | Label : , , , | 0 Comments
Gadget News | Apps Gadgets If you ever wanted to get some dual SIM action going on your iPhone 4, or iPhone 4S, now you can. But you're going to need to take the jailbreak plunge first.

The system is on offer thanks to the Vooma Peel PG920, a battery back up case that also has room for a regular sized SIM. Combined with the jailbreak-only Vooma app, you can then switch to use your secondary SIM card - essentially using your iPhone as a slave UI to the PG920's phone capabilities.
It's not a perfect system as yet, TechCrunch tried it out and said the interface is a little clunky, and it's only in pre-release stage at the moment.
The US-based site did describe it as "a very cool and clever hack" and one that "works without problems on any jailbroken iPhone" though.
In terms of looks, think along the same lines as the likes of the Mophie Juice Pack. Sure, you'd be adding a bit of bulk to your iPhone's skinny frame but you'll get a battery boost too, along with the added SIM functionality - handy if you're travelling abroad, or you're a drug dealer or an adulterer.
If you are interested in the Vooma Peel PG920, you can register your details on the company's website. Vooma states that the PG920 is FCC approved.
