Apple fixed that annoying new iPhone unlock gesture in iOS 10 beta 2

Apple released iOS 10 beta 2 on Tuesday, which brings many improvements and fixes as well as a number of tweaks that were not available in the first beta release. Among them, however, there’s one new feature in particular that you should know about, and use as soon as possible to fix your entire iPhone experience.

In iOS 10, Apple is going to replace its iconic “slide to unlock” gesture with something that sounds really dumb, “press to unlock.” In the first iOS 10 beta, even after the Touch ID login was complete you still had to press the button to unlock the phone, as seen in the animation above. Thankfully, Apple “fixed” the issue in its latest release.

MUST SEE: This fully assembled iPhone 7 probably shows us exactly what the finished phone looks like

From the looks of it, “press to unlock” is going to be the default iPhone unlock feature in iOS 10. To enable the “old” gesture, you have to go to the Settings app, then Accessibility, and then Home Button. In there, you’ll find a toggle for Rest Finger to Unlock, which you’ll have to enable to restore your regular iPhone unlocking experience.

Here’s a screenshot of the new iOS settings menu, via iCrackYouriDevice:

We already explained why the slide-to-unlock is going away – read this post to find out. To try on iOS 10 beta 2 without a developer account, you need to follow the instructions here, while the video at this link will show you all the best new features in iOS 10 beta 2, complete with the home button unlock fix noted above.

This might be a truly exciting hidden Galaxy Note 7 feature

By Gadget News | At 3:09 PM | Label : | 0 Comments

Galaxy Note 7 microSD SlotImage Source: @evleaks

The Galaxy Note 7 is going to be one of the hottest and most expensive phones you’ll be able to buy this year. The phone should offer an even better overall performance than the Galaxy S7 devices, thanks to better processors and more RAM. The phablet is supposedly shipping with an improved stylus, and will feature an iris scanner, a feature not seen on many mobile devices. But one of the most exciting features of the Galaxy Note 7 concerns a feature that’s usually taken for granted, and really noticed when it’s absent.

Top Prime Day deals:
Samsung Curved 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD TV for $650
Amazon Fire TV Stick for $25
Xbox One Bundle for $270

The Galaxy Note 7 might feature a reinvented microSD slot that could accommodate Samsung’s fastest microSD cards, the UFS 1.0 cards that were unveiled just a few days ago.

Why is it so exciting? Because the new cards will deliver speeds that match SSD performance, or five times what, the best microSD cards can offer. Samsung did not explain it properly in its press release last week, but the company told BGR the new UFS 1.0 cards require a new slot – they have a slightly different design when compared to microSD cards – and a processor that can handle external UFS storage.

samsung-microsd-ufs-2.0-memory

Samsung, however, will not make the old microSD cards obsolete just yet. The company told Droid-Life that it already created a hybrid microSD-UFS slot that could house both types of cards.

“The new UFS cards are not compatible with the current microSD card socket,” Samsung said. “However, we have developed a socket design that can support both UFS cards and microSD cards. We are working with different partners in the industry on this integration for next-generation devices.”

The company did not spell it out that the next Galaxy Note model will have expandable storage that supports the new UFS memory, and we don’t expect it to confirm it anytime soon. But the fact that UFS microSD cards were announced before the upcoming early August Galaxy Note 7 launch and the fact that it confirmed it created a socket design ready to support both the new and the old seem to be indications that the new phablet might offer users access to the fastest memory cards in town. And that’s one feature to get immensely excited about, as it can pave the way for an even faster mobile experience.

The iPhone 7 might be the first iPhone with decent battery life

iPhone 7 Battery RumorImage Source: Martin Hajek

Apple has already lowered expectations for the iPhone 7, using leaks to hint at only incremental changes. But according to one new rumor, Apple fans might finally be getting something they’ve wanted for years — a bigger battery.

According to generally reliable Twitter leaker OnLeaks, the iPhone 7 will be packing a 1960mAh battery. That’s a small but significant step up from the 1715mAh battery in the iPhone 6s, and could be enough to offer multi-day runtimes for some users.

DON’T MISS: Pokemon Go-related car crashes are now a thing

It’s just one rumor from a “pretty reliable” source, so this isn’t a total lock. But it would make a lot of sense. There’s a good chance that the iPhone 7 will ship without a headphone jack, something that has annoyed a lot of people.

But removing the headphone jack actually saves a lot of space in the phone’s body, space which could easily go towards more battery. The jump from 1715mAh to 1960mAh is about a 15% increase, which sounds exactly like the kind of improvement you would see by replacing the headphone jack space with battery.

Either way, a bigger battery would be a smart move from Apple. iPhones have long had lower-capacity batteries than the flagship Android devices. It’s not been a real problem for most users, but with manufacturers out of ideas for ways to improve hardware, selling the “longest-lasting iPhone ever” would be a good way to get new users on board.

This is how Motorola fixed its Moto Z 3.5mm headphone jack problem

By Gadget News | At 1:07 PM | Label : | 0 Comments

Moto Z USB-C-to-3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter

Many people have a strong negative opinion about Apple’s rumored decision to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, but Apple isn’t the only company doing it. Lenovo-owned Motorola announced new Moto Z flagship devices earlier this year, and they do not feature a 3.5mm standard audio headphone jack. Yet there’s no petition urging Motorola not to do it, and the media is generally ignoring the change.

Meanwhile, the Moto Z versions coming to Verizon have been made official, and Motorola unearthed a solution for the problem it’s creating.

DON’T MISS: The iPhone on this carpet is impossible to spot

The company is well aware that some Moto Z buyers will want to use their existing headphones, so Motorola came up with an USB-to-3.5mm adapter to support standard headphones.

This is how it looks like, as pictured by The Verge.

moto-z-usb-c-to-3.5mm-adapter

Thankfully, the adapter is included in every Moto Z box, which means you don’t have to worry about paying extra for it. But if you lose it, there’s no way to replace it yet.

Aside from using an adapter, there are two other ways to listen to music on the Moto Z, including using wired USB-C headphones or Bluetooth headphones.

Now is a really bad time to buy a smartphone

New Smartphone Review

Are you thinking about upgrading to the latest and greatest smartphone this summer? Don’t. Thanks to the endless cycle of consumerism we call “life,” there is always a good and a bad time to buy a new smartphone. This is the latter.

DON’T MISS: How to install iOS 10 beta 3 on your iPhone or iPad without a developer account

True, there’s never really a perfect time to buy a new device. Something better and faster and prettier and cheaper is always just around the corner, but it’s particularly bad right now.

Let’s talk about iPhones first. Rumors are rampant about the soon-t0-be-released iPhone, which will probably be out in September. According to a bunch of well-sourced reports in big publications, the iPhone 7 (or whatever it’s called) will feature only incremental upgrades. The shell will look mostly the same, and the camera and processor inside might be getting small spec bumps.

Really, the only difference you’re likely to see is the lack of a headphone jack. It’s looking increasingly likely that Apple’s next iPhone will ditch the 3.5mm jack that’s been the standard on smartphones for over a decade, forcing you to use Bluetooth headphones or buy new headphones with a Lightning jack.

(Or, you could use a dongle, but dongles are dumb.)

How big of a deal this is depends on who you are, and how you use your phone. I’m personally of the opinion that sacrificing the headphone jack for higher-quality audio and more battery life is a good trade-off, but I also use my headphone jack very infrequently.

Regardless of where you stand on HeadphoneJackGate though, I can tell you one thing: you’ll be better off if you’re not on the bleeding edge of it. Assuming that the world switches over to digital audio, it will take a little time to make the transition. If you hold off on getting a headphone-jack-less phone for a year, then when you do finally make the leap, there will be a whole selection of excellent headphones for you to choose from, not just one crummy pair of Apple EarPods and a bunch of Beats.

iPhone 8 Concept

Tell me you don’t want that in your life

Headphones aside, the iPhone 7 still looks like a crummy buy. Rumors indicate that next year, for the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone, Apple will be rolling out an all-new design with an OLED screen. Even if we don’t know all the details yet, it sure as hell sounds like it’s worth waiting for.

That wait, incidentally, is not as bad as it used to be. If you’re using an iPhone 6 or 6s right now (or even an older 5s), your phone won’t have slowed down substantially. The gap between a 5s and the 7 won’t be nearly as big as the gap between, say, a 4s and a 6.

Both will run apps at speed, take great photos and generally do everything you need a phone to do. The differences are pretty small: no Apple Pay, no always-on Siri, smaller screen. If those things will make your life immeasurably better, well, you should probably sit down and think about your priorities.

If you absolutely have to buy a new phone right now — say, you threw your phone at the sidewalk in a fit of Trump-induced rage — can I suggest buying an excellent iPhone SE for $0, keeping it in a bulletproof case, and reselling it in a year’s time for 2/3rds of the value and buying the 2017 UberiPhone then?

galaxy-s7-htc-10-lg-g5

But hey! What if you’re an Apple-hating Android lover who’s thinking about upgrading? Again: just hang in there a bit. There’s a bunch of excellent new Android phones on the market right now, sure. But changes are coming.

Firstly, there are new Nexus phones made by HTC in the works, and they look damn good. Expectations are for the two new devices, codenamed Marlin and Sailfish, to launch in September or October this year. Nexus phones traditionally offer fantastic performance at a low price, not to mention the ability to use Google’s own Google Fi cellular network.

More importantly (and this is the big one), devices launched later this year are expected to work with Google’s Daydream VR platform. Daydream is Google’s big play into the world of VR, using high-powered smartphones with a dedicated VR headset to view VR content. On the software and content side, everything is powered by Google, which should make it a formidable competitor to the likes of Samsung’s VR headset, and even the Oculus Rift.

By buying a non-Daydream-compatible handset like a Galaxy S7 right now, you’re ruling yourself out of a fantastic VR platform for years to come. Delay your purchase for a couple months, and quality VR could be an included extra.

iPhone 7 in rose gold, gold and space gray shown in new video

iPhone 7 Colors Rose Gold Space GrayImage Source: Martin Hajek

We just can’t have enough video leaks featuring the unreleased 2016 iPhones, particularly since it looks like many people have access to dummy units of the upcoming iPhone 7. We saw a bunch of videos in the past few days featuring the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 model, and now it’s time to look at a new clip that shows the device in three different colors, including rose gold, gold, and space gray.

DON’T MISS: Leaked photos show a real iPhone 7 powered on for the first time

Those of you familiar with the iPhone 7 know what to expect: the same, recycled iPhone 6/6s design with a few minor changes. Gone is the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the antenna bands are a bit less off-putting than before. The camera on the back is still protruding, but it’s bigger and it doesn’t have a separate metal ring around the lens. You can easily see these features in the video embedded below, which was posted by YouTube channel Concepts iPhone.

It’s not clear where the leaks originate from, but the iPhone shell does come with “iPhone” markings. Before you ask, no, these aren’t functional devices and the front of the handsets isn’t even shown. That said, these iPhone 7 mockups are in line with many of the previous reports on Apple’s plans for the iPhone 7. As has been the case with earlier leaks, they were likely created in a factory using actual iPhone schematics that leaked earlier this year from Apple’s iPhone manufacturing partner Foxconn.

Check out this new video below.

Latest leak confirms key details surrounding Google’s next-gen Nexus phones

By Gadget News | At 10:04 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]
Google Nexus 2016 HTC Sailfish SpecsImage Source: YouTube

It was a few months ago that we first heard that HTC might make not one but two 2016 Nexus devices from Google. More rumors emerged since then, including a few reports from trustworthy sources, providing design details and specs list for the HTC Sailfish and Marlin, the upcoming 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch new Nexus devices. A fresh leak seems to confirm some of these reports, indicating that the Sailfish will have the high-end specs you expect.

DON’T MISS: Apple’s iPhone 7 finally gets a release date

Famed leaker Evan Blass discovered a build.prop file that lists several hardware details for the smaller new Nexus smartphone. The HTC Sailfish S1 will supposedly have a 5.2-inch display with a screen density of 420, which means it’ll have a Full HD resolution rather than QHD. Furthermore, the handset should have a Snapdragon 820 processor, which is the kind of mobile silicon you find in this year’s high-end handset. But it’s not the newest Snapdragon 821 CPU that was just unveiled and which was rumored to equip the 2016 Google Nexus handsets this year.

The phone is expected to support biometric security, the file reports, which probably refers to fingerprint scanning technology.

There isn’t a similar file for Marlin, but a recent report did say that both phones will have the same hardware.

Google’s 2016 Nexus handsets should be unveiled later this summer, as soon as Android 7.0 Nougat is ready to roll out.

Leak may have just confirmed the secret Apple had up its sleeve for the iPhone 7

By Gadget News | At 9:03 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]
iPhone 7 FeaturesImage Source: Martin Hajek

Apple’s iPhone 7 is shaping up to be a more intriguing device than we may have originally given it credit for. According to a new report from Macotakara — a site with an impressive track record regarding Apple rumors — the home button on Apple’s next-gen iPhone will sit flush with the screen and will not move when pressed. Instead, Apple is planning to incorporate a series of sensors underneath the home button that will trigger a slight vibration when pressed. This, in turn, will provide users with the illusion that the iPhone 7 home button is a mechanical button.

While we’ve seen rumblings pointing to a home button redesign before, Macotakara’s corroboration arguably provides exceedingly convincing proof that the iPhone’s tried and true home button will see an innovative new redesign come September.

MUST WATCH: Two new videos get up close and personal with the iPhone 7 like never before

The report further adds that the sensors underneath the iPhone 7 home button will be pressure sensitive, thereby paving the way for Apple to incorporate 3D Touch functionality on the screen as well as via the home button itself. Notably, Apple has already implemented this type of technology on its MacBook line via a feature it calls Force Touch.

To provide some context, here’s what Apple has to say about the Force Touch feature on the MacBook:

Force sensors detect how much pressure you’re applying, and the new Taptic Engine provides a click sensation when you press anywhere on the surface. Now the click that once was a single, mechanical function is just the start of what you can do with Force Touch. The sensory capabilities of the Force Touch trackpad allow you to tell your MacBook what you want it to do based on subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply. This makes it possible to perform a variety of different actions in different apps, all on the same surface. And it can respond with haptic feedback you can actually feel, making your MacBook more usable and personal than ever before.

Now imagine that type of user experience wrapped up in a sleek new iPhone 7: all of a sudden, the iPhone 7 becomes a much more interesting device than previously imagined.

The report further adds that Apple is planning to introduce a new color to its iPhone lineup this fall, a Space Black model to be specific. Notably, we’ve seen a few rumblings suggesting the same over the past few weeks. All told, Apple’s iPhone 7 lineup will likely come in an array of 5 colors – Gold, Rose Gold, Space Grey, Silver and Space Black. While previous rumors hinted at a dark blue iPhone 7 model, those reports were subsequently debunked.

As a final point, word leaked over this past weekend that Apple’s new iPhone 7 models are set to go on sale on September 16th. While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed anything just yet, the above leak came via Evan Blass, as reputable a leaker as they come.

Crazy iPhone trick turns your wallpapers into optical illusions

By Gadget News | At 8:02 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]

Earlier today we shared a video with you that covered 25 iPhone tweaks that will make you want to jailbreak your phone. There are definitely some fantastic tweaks in there and after watching that video, there’s no question that you’ll seriously consider jailbreaking your iPhone. Of course, just because you consider it doesn’t mean you’ll actually end up doing it.

If you decide not to jailbreak your iPhone, there are still some very cool tricks that will wow your friends and help set your iPhone apart from the pack. We showed you one nifty trick earlier this week, which allows anyone to easily turn all of their folders into round icons instead of the standard rounded squares. Now, we’re back with another crazy trick that might be even cooler.

MUST SEE: Two new videos get up close and personal with the iPhone 7 like never before

Back on Tuesday we shared a video that showed off a very cool iPhone glitch. All you have to do is apply a special wallpaper to your home screen and it instantly makes all of your folder icons round. No one knows exactly how or why it works, but it does.

Now, we have another cool glitchy iPhone trick to share.

Twitter user Hide, the same source who discovered the round folder icon trick and supplied all the wallpapers that make it possible, is back with a cool new trick. Using one of the dozens upon dozens of wallpapers he made, you can transform your wallpaper into a moving optical illusion. The trick works just like Sonos’ new logo — special patterns in the images make the graphics appear to pulse or vibrate. All you have to do is apply one of the special wallpapers while making sure to enable Apple’s “perspective” parallax feature, which makes the wallpaper move as you shift the iPhone’s position.

A video showing off the trick is embedded below, and you can download the wallpapers shown in the video (and dozens more) by visiting this website on your iPhone.

10 awesome Galaxy Note 7 features you won’t find on any iPhone

By Gadget News | At 7:01 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]

Not that there was much mystery to begin with following weeks of leaks and rumors, but Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 is finally official. The new flagship phablet was unveiled just moments ago during a press conference at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, and Android fans certainly seem to like what they see. Samsung’s latest and greatest features cutting-edge specs and a sleek design that improves upon last year’s Note 5, but it also has something else that its biggest rival does not: An awesome set of special features that make great use of its large size.

That’s right, it’s time to pit the newly crowned best phablet in the world against the best-selling phablet in the world to see how the new Galaxy Note 7 compares to the iPhone 6s Plus.

MUST READ: Galaxy Note 7 hands-on: Killer phablet features the iPhone still can’t touch

As I mentioned in my Galaxy Note 7 hands-on preview — and as I’ve discussed numerous times since late 2014 with the iPhone 6 Plus debuted — Apple’s iPhone phablets are bigger solely for the sake of being bigger. People wanted larger iPhones so Apple made a larger iPhone. The 6 Plus and 6s Plus don’t include a single new feature that makes use of the phones’ larger form factor.

On the other hand, Samsung is a seasoned pro when it comes to phablets and the new Galaxy Note 7 is packed full of phablet-specific features. There are also some fantastic general features that you won’t find on any iPhone, and in this post we’ll take a look at the 10 best ones.

S Pen Stylus

Sure there are styluses that can by purchased separately and used with the iPhone 6s Plus, but none of them offer the experience or deep software integration afforded by the Galaxy Note 7.

The S Pen experience on the Note lineup has always been terrific, and it’s better than ever on the Note 7. Refinements include the consolidation of all of Samsung’s different note-taking apps into one “Samsung Notes” app, new Air Command features like translate and magnify functions, the ability to select a video and easily convert it into a GIF, and more. The stylus itself is also new and improved, with a .7mm tip that feels almost like a ballpoint pen as you write.

Always-On Display

Another great feature you won’t find on the iPhone is Samsung’s Always-On Display (AOD), which keeps most of the screen off while the phone is asleep but displays certain information that can be customized to suit your needs. For example, you can display a clock, a calendar, notifications, and so on.

Which brings us to our third feature…

Screen Off Memo

This is easily one of my favorite new Galaxy Note 7 features.

When the phone is asleep and you remove the S Pen stylus, you can instantly begin writing a memo on the display without waking up the phone. The photo at the top of this article shows you what it looks like — but that’s not even the best part. Once you’ve written your note, you can pin it to the AOD display. So, for example, you can write out a shopping list and then pin it to your AOD so you don’t even have to wake your phone as you make your way around the supermarket.

Super AMOLED Display

It’s incredible how far past Apple the company’s rivals have pushed when it comes to display quality. There’s just no reason Apple should still be using LCD panels. The iPhone 6s has a solid screen, but it doesn’t compare at all to the deep blacks and wonderful contrast offered by Samsung’s Super AMOLED panels.

2K resolution

Sticking to the screen for a bit longer, display resolution is another area where Apple has fallen far behind. The iPhone 6s has a 720p screen — 720p! — and the 6s Plus has a 1080p display. Meanwhile, Samsung’s quad HD displays offer a viewing experience that is far more clear and crisp.

Iris Scanner

Apple might have popularized the idea of including a fingerprint scanner on a smartphone, but Samsung took things to the next level with its new iris scanner. In the blink of an eye (pun intended, sadly), the Galaxy Note 7 can scan your irises using a dedicated front-facing camera coupled with a special infrared sensor. The new feature cannot be spoofed with a photo, and it can be used to unlock the phone, authenticate a mobile payment, or grant access to the Secure Folder.

Secure Folder

What was that last thing mentioned above? The Secure Folder is an awesome new feature that lets Note 7 users store sensitive files in a special encrypted folder that has an extra layer of security protecting it. This way you can unlock your phone and share it with friends or family members without giving them access to your sensitive data.

Another cool feature of the Secure Folder is the fact that it’s not just for things like photos and passwords. You can actually install an instance of any app within the secure folder, and it will then be protected by that second layer of security. So for example, you can have your personal Gmail account in the main Gmail app installation, and then install another instance of Gmail in the Secure Folder for your work email

IP68 Water- and Dust Resistance

Enough said.

Expandable Storage

Enough. Said.

Battery Life

Last but certainly not least, the Note 7 includes a massive 3,500 mAh battery supported by a power-sipping processor, three different power saving modes and fast-charging technology that refuels the handset’s battery faster than any iPhone. That compares to a 2,750 mAh battery in the iPhone 6s Plus, which has one basic power saving mode and no support for fast-charging tech.

New video shows off a ridiculously hot iPhone 7 Plus in deep blue

By Gadget News | At 6:00 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]

How hot would a deep blue iPhone 7 Plus look in your hand? China-based headphone company BeSound decided to promote its new headphones by trying to answer that question. The company had an iPhone 7 Plus mockup built — likely in a Chinese factory using the same leaked iPhone schematics that others have been using — and instead of using one of the typical colors we’ve seen floating around, they treated the metal housing to give it a blue finish. Then BeSound teamed up with a YouTube vlogger to show off its creation.

The resulting iPhone 7 Plus model may very well be the hottest one we’ve seen so far.

DON’T MISS: iPhone 7 survival guide: Release date, specs, pricing and more

Apple introduced a new color into its iPhone lineup just last year when it launched the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold. It seems peculiar that the company would roll out another new color just one year later, but the relatively minor visual redesign expected for this year’s iPhone 7 lineup may have prompted Apple to take additional steps in an effort to crank up demand.

We’ve heard rumors that Apple would launch the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in either black or blue. Neither rumor can be considered solid at this point, but we’ve seen leaks that support both new colors. First, a black mute button reportedly headed to the iPhone 7 was pictured in a leak. Then, one of Apple’s wireless carrier partners posted a teaser image that definitely suggests a blue iPhone 7 is coming.

Whether or not Apple’s next-generation iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come in deep blue, we now can at least state conclusively that the new color would look fantastic. The hands-on video showing off this gorgeous iPhone 7 Plus dummy follows below and if you’re an Apple fan, you should definitely check it out.

This lost iPhone scam is way too easy to fall for

By Gadget News | At 4:59 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]
Lost iPhone ScamImage Source: Zach Epstein, BGR

Losing your iPhone already sucks, but at least with modern devices, you can brick it remotely and be certain it’s not going to be worth more than just parts. That’s the idea, anyway, but as Joonas Kiminki recently discovered, things can be a little different if the thieves are clever.

In a post on Medium, Kiminki details how someone with his phone used a good phishing scam to try and get his iCloud account details, which would have enabled them to open his iPhone, reset it, and sell it as a perfectly working device. Even if you’re careful with phishing scams, this one is easy to fall for.

DON’T MISS: The only bad cell company is Sprint

Kiminki’s phone was stolen from a car, through a broken window. As soon as he discovered the theft, he marked the phone as lost, and set Find My iPhone to send an email if it was found.

A couple days later, he received an email apparently from Apple, saying the iPhone was found, and providing an iCloud login link to see the address. Any reasonable person would probably click the link and enter their details, but it’s really just a classic phishing scam.

The email was sent from a Gmail account set up to look like Apple, and the URL for the login page was show-iphone-location.com — not a legit Apple site.

Kiminki’s theory is that the thieves found his name through his Medical ID, used that to find his email, and then set up the phishing attack so that they could get his details and unlock his iPhone. In this case, they picked the wrong target, as Kiminki’s a director of a technology firm. But for most people, it’s an annoying new thing to watch out for when you lose your phone.

Don’t get too excited about this brand new iPhone 7 leak

By Gadget News | At 3:58 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]
iPhone 7 Rumors DisplayImage Source: Austin Evans, YouTube

We see new iPhone 7 rumors on an almost daily basis, which isn’t that surprising, considering that we’re closing in on this year’s iPhone keynote. However, most reports paint the same overall picture for the iPhone 7. But there are a few rumors that do not follow the pattern we expect, making us question whether they can be accurate.

Such is the case with a brand new iPhone 7 leak that delivers what seems to be great news about the phone’s display, though we haven’t seen reports from trustworthy sources corroborate it.

DON’T MISS: Report: the iPhone 7 will be exactly what you’re expecting

Posted on Weibo, the following image supposedly features the iPhone 7’s displays, for both the 4.7-inch and the 5.5-inch versions. What’s surprising about it is that the person who posted it claims the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will get a 1080p display (or Full HD), while the 5.5-inch is going to 1440p (or 2K).

Furthermore, the source says one of the panels is made by JDI, which is a known Apple screen supplier.

However, what’s strange about the leak is that it implies Apple will bump up the resolution of the screen, something it didn’t do with the iPhone 6s last year. It’s not that Apple would not have the ability to improve screen resolution for the iPhone, but that the whole thing might cause some issues with third-party apps.

iphone-7-leak-displays

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 have 750p and 1080p displays for the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch versions, respectively. The hardware should support the resolution bump, considering that similar devices from the competition support Full HD and 2K displays already.

However, most of the existing iPhone rumors have failed to detail this particular upgrade for the iPhone 7, which makes us question this story, even if it does come from a source that Phone Arena describes as having posted numerous credible Apple tips in the past.

Donald Trump’s angriest tweets are sent from his Android while the nice ones are sent from an iPhone

Over the weekend, Hollywood visual effects director Todd Vaziri (you’ve undoubtedly seen his work in films like Avatar, The Avengers and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) made a casual and rather interesting observation about Donald Trump’s tweeting habits.

After looking at two months worth of Trump tweets, Vaziri noticed that most of Trumps more abrasive and hyperbolic tweets were sent from Android devices. On the flip side, Trumps more benign postings tended to come exclusively from iPhone devices.

DON’T MISS: This brand new Pokemon Go map tracker actually works

The tweet, which exploded on Twitter, reads:

With that theory as a jumping off point, data scientist David Robinson of Stack Overflow decided to perform a fascinating statistical analysis of Trump’s tweets and see firsthand what the cold hard data revealed.

Looking back at Trump’s last 130 tweets, Robinson found that the distribution of tweets between Android devices and the iPhone wasn’t that far off, with 628 tweets coming from the iPhone and 762 tweets coming from Android.

Upon analyzing which words were more likely to come from either smartphone, Robinson’s research yielded the following chart.

donald trump tweet android iphone

“A lot of emotionally charged words, like “badly”, “crazy”, “weak”, and “dumb”, were overwhelmingly more common on Android,” Robinson writes. “This supports the original hypothesis that this is the “angrier” or more hyperbolic account.”

Diving deeper, Robinson next utilized the NRC Emotion Lexicon to more closely evaluate the word usage across each mobile device and associate it with a particular emotion. Ultimately, Robinson found that “Trump’s Android account uses about 40-80% more words related to disgust, sadness, fear, anger, and other “negative” sentiments than the iPhone account does.”

Of course, the take away here isn’t that Trump magically transforms into a benign tweeter once he picks up an iPhone. On the contrary, it’s pretty clear that there are two people who have access to Trump’s Twitter account: Trump, of course, who tweets from his own personal Android device and a Trump staffer who tweets from an iPhone.

What makes Robinson’s work so fascinating is that he wrote his own code to analyze all aspects of Trump’s tweets across each mobile platform and then utilized some ole’ fashioned statistical analysis to draw his conclusions. Make sure to hit the source link below for more information about Trump’s tweeting habits along with a deeper dive into the statistical methods Robinson used in order to churn out this fascinating piece of work.

Yet another exciting new iPhone 7 feature may have just been uncovered

iPhone 7 RumorsImage Source: Weibo

Thinner housing, updated design, more powerful processor, improved antenna design, better displays, hugely improved cameras, new 3D Touch home button, double the storage, better water-resistance… man oh man, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus sure do sound boring!

We have discussed at length the idea that Apple’s new 2016 iPhone lineup is going to be “boring” in recent weeks, and this past Friday I penned a post suggesting the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are going to be anything but boring when they’re finally unveiled in the coming weeks. Now, on top of everything we’ve already heard, evidence from a source with a decent track record suggests that Apple has yet another new feature coming to this year’s new iPhones that Apple fans have been waiting for.

MUST READ: The iPhone 7 is going to be so much more exciting than you think

What’s the worst thing about Apple’s iPhone lineup? Different people have different opinions, but most would likely point to battery life as their biggest iPhone pain point. Compared to rival devices, battery life is one area where Apple has fallen well behind other companies in the market.

Compounding matters, Apple’s iPhones don’t have a feature comparable to rivals’ extreme power saving modes, and they also don’t support fast charging technology so they take way too long to charge. In fact, I’m testing an Android smartphone right now with a battery that’s more than twice the size of the one in the iPhone 6s, but they both take about the same amount of time to charge.

Thankfully, it looks like Apple is going to address at least one of these issues when the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are released next month.

Twitter user The Malignant has been known in the past to post leaks from various sources on Chinese microblogging site Weibo that turn out to be authentic. In one of his latest posts on Twitter, he shares a leaked image that purportedly shows a new component Apple plans to include in the upcoming iPhone 7. It’s unclear exactly what the component is, but the source claims that it’s a new power management assembly that supports fast charging technology. The supposed new component is shown next to the same component from last year’s iPhone 6s, and the differences between the two are obvious.

Cpzb2K1XgAAuNeS

The good news if this new leak pans out is that Apple’s new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will recharge faster than earlier iPhones, which is a big deal considering how often they need to be recharged — I know my iPhone never lasts a full day. The bad news is that the source of the leak says Apple’s new iPhones will support at least 5V/2A fast charging. Hopefully that “at least” turns out to be a low estimate because 5V/2A would put the new iPhones on par with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 1.0 tech from all the way back in 2013.

Steve Wozniak has free advice for Apple on how to fix the iPhone 7’s major issue

By Gadget News | At 10:53 PM | Label : | 0 Comments

Apple inventor and co-founder Steve Wozniak is known for expressing his opinions on Apple’s products and telling it like it is. Unsurprisingly, the legendary programmer has some free advice for Apple regarding the iPhone 7’s most important “issue,” the absence of the headphone jack.

DON’T MISS: The iPhone 7 will obliterate the Galaxy Note 7 and every other smartphone

Apple is yet to confirm the new iPhone will lack a standard audio connector, but pretty much expects the iPhone maker to kill the aging port.

“If it’s missing the 3.5mm earphone jack, that’s going to tick off a lot of people,” Wozniak told The Australian Financial Review, echoing the worries of many others.

His main concern is with audio over Bluetooth, which he says is inferior to the 3.5mm output.

“I would not use Bluetooth … I don’t like wireless. I have cars where you can plug in the music, or go through Bluetooth, and Bluetooth just sounds so flat for the same music,” he said.

However, Apple is yet to confirm whether the bundled headphones that ship with every iPhone will be wired or wireless. Apple is rumored to either launch Lightning EarPods, or introduce its first wireless headphones this year.

Woz would like to use his current headphone setup with the future iPhone, even if that means buying adaptors for them. “Mine have custom ear implants, they fit in so comfortably, I can sleep on them and everything. And they only come out with one kind of jack, so I’ll have to go through the adaptor,” he said.

On the other hand, it’s likely that the company that makes Wozniak’s favorite headphones will come up with Lightning versions if the market demands it.

But the man who started Apple with Steve Jobs in a garage is convinced that Apple is skating where the puck is going. “If there’s a Bluetooth 2 that has higher bandwidth and better quality, that sounds like real music, I would use [wireless headphones],” he said. “But we’ll see. Apple is good at moving towards the future, and I like to follow that.”

Wozniak also praised the USB-C port, and saying that the new port is going to be “the future,” and implying Apple should use it in smartphones too. Interestingly, Intel has recently explained why audio over USB-C will be so much better than current 3.5mm musical experiences in the near future.

Google Nexus 2016: Marlin vs. Galaxy Note 7

Google is expected to release two new Android phones in the coming weeks. Most reports refer to them as 2016 Nexus devices, while a fresh rumor claims Google will go for Google branding instead. The company is supposedly looking to better position its devices to fight against the iPhone, and the rumored device will have high-end specs and high-quality design. A brand new leak indicates that the phones will indeed have top hardware, matching the specs of some of the hottest smartphones out there, including the Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 series.

DON’T MISS: I can’t wait to see Apple’s silly explanation for the iPhone 7’s camera

An Antutu benchmark for the “Google Nexus Marlin” found on Weibo by The Malignant indicates the tested phone packed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 13-megapixel primary camera, and 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The handset also has a 2560 x 1440 (2K) display.

A few days ago, a similar leak was posted online for the HTC Sailfish, which is the smaller of the two. Aside from screen resolution, set at 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) for the Sailfish, the two handsets are identical.

The Sailfish leak also included Geekbench scores for the handset: 2158 in single-core and 5355 in multi-core tests.

A search for “Google Marlin” on Geekbench produces scores for the upcoming phablet as well. Recorded on June 30th, or well over a month before the Google Sailfish listing was spotted, the test lists 2084 and 4969 in single- and multi-core tests for the Marlin.

Recently, HTC documentation submitted to the FCC already confirmed the company is making two new devices for Google, whose user manuals will be found on Google’s Nexus mini-website.

Furthermore, the first real photos of the HTC-made phones have emerged online.

At this point, it’s probably a matter of weeks until we’re going to see the Marlin and Sailfish become official. October 4th is the rumored release date for the handsets.

The massive iPhone speed improvement that no one is talking about

By Gadget News | At 11:54 AM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]
iPhone vs Galaxy Note Storage SpeedImage Source: Zach Epstein, BGR

Every year we want our pocket computers to be even faster at doing amazing smarter things and be more energy efficient than last year. We look for faster chips, more RAM, more storage, and bigger batteries. Smartphone makers often deliver, making each new smartphone generation quicker and better than the previous one. As consumers, we often focus on processor types, and the amount of memory and storage to determine whether a certain smartphone is going to be good enough. One thing we don’t always acknowledge is the quality of certain components, and we consistently fail to talk about the speed of one critical part of an iPhone or Android device: the speed of its “hard drive.”

Having massive amounts of built-in flash memory and expandable storage isn’t enough if it’s not fast. Thankfully, some of the companies developing these storage solutions for iPhone and flagship Android devices are working on faster and more energy efficient storage solutions. Samsung is one of the company to keep an eye on when it comes to mobile storage, as it just announced plans to make its insanely fast smartphone storage solutions even quicker in the coming years, and that might benefit the iPhone as well.

DON’T MISS: Best Buy has 50 hot deals that will be good for just 50 hours

One of the reasons the iPhone 6s is so fast when compared to the iPhone 6 is because of Apple’s way of handling memory. According to AnandTech’s detailed explanation of the matter, Apple adapted its MacBook SSD controller — which makes MacBook data transfers incredibly fast — and modified it to use inside a smartphone. Furthermore, the report revealed that the iPhone 6s uses NVMe protocol with custom NAND memory which ruled out UFS or traditional eMMC. The iPad Pro and iPhone SE uses the same type of storage as the 2015 iPhones.

In tests, Apple’s storage solution beat the Galaxy S6 series, which came loaded with UFS 2.0 built-in storage, itself being an incredibly fast memory.

Samsung this February announced that its UFS 2.0 technology is getting even faster. Furthermore capacity increased up to 256GB as speeds went up to 850MB/s (sequential reading) and up to 260MB/s (sequential writing). But Samsung’s freshly released Galaxy S7 can’t beat Apple’s iPhone 6s storage speeds, according to the same tests from AnandTech. Neither does the Galaxy Note 7 (see charts above).

This, however, doesn’t mean that Samsung isn’t looking to come up with even faster storage solutions for mobile devices. Speaking at the Mobile & IOT 2016 Forum in Seoul earlier this week, Samsung said that UFS storage would be significantly upgraded in coming years, Business Korea reports.

“4K or 8K cameras on drones make high-capacity storage devices essential parts.” Samsung’s Cho Hee-chang said. “The use of UFS will rise in production of VR contents or semiconductors for automobiles where camera sensors are very important.” Cho expects some 50 billion of connected devices by 2020, with UFS popularity set to expand in following years.

Internal UFS 2.0 and UFS 2.1 memory, the one that goes into phones like the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note, and has theoretical speeds of 1.2GB/s should move to 2.4GB/s in the first half of 2018.

Samsung also wants to double the speed of its UFS card v.1.0 standard (for its incredibly fast new microSD cards) that supports speeds of up to 0MB/s to UFS card v2.0, which would transfer data at 1.2GB/s speeds.

And since Samsung is a major memory provider for a variety of companies, even Apple, we have plenty of reasons to be excited about the smartphones of the future, iPhone included.

Sure, some will point out that Apple uses its proprietary controller technology with PCI-E NVMe protocols for its iPhone memory, while Samsung uses the AHCI protocol for its UFS V-NAND memory. It’s all sounds too complicated with all the acronyms, but so far Apple’s solution is the faster one according to benchmarks, with SanDisk claiming that PCI-E NVMe is the future for mobile (see this presentation).

Samsung, meanwhile, is sticking with UFS for the foreseeable future, and that’s not a bad thing. UFS memory will only get faster in future Galaxy S and Galaxy Note smartphones, at least according to Samsung’s projections for the following years.

Furthermore, Samsung has plenty of competition in the storage market that will not want to fall behind when it comes to overall storage speeds and energy efficiency. Not to mention that Samsung has been known to combine V-NAND technology and NVMe standards into a single storage package: it’s called Samsung 950 PRO, an M.2 SSD that features sequential read speeds of up to 2.5GB/s and write speeds of up to 1.5GB/s. It might be only a matter of time before this type of technology is miniaturized for smartphones that will have increasingly higher storage needs and speed requirements.

Apple’s next iPhones could capture video footage and fingerprint data of thieves

By Gadget News | At 9:52 PM | Label : | 0 Comments

Being one of the most desirable items on the planet, it’s no wonder that the iPhone is often the target of theft. Apple has done an admirable job of battling back against thieves with tools such as Find My iPhone and giving iPhone owners the ability to wipe their devices remotely when they are lost or stolen.

But the future of iPhone security could be far more impressive.

DON’T MISS: New video goes behind the scenes of an iPhone 7 leak for the first time ever

On Thursday morning, Patently Apple shared a patent from Apple that describes a security system which would allow iPhones to capture a thief’s fingerprint data using Touch ID and then record video or capture a picture of the thief.

Here’s the full explanation from the patent:

“A computing device may determine to capture biometric information in response to the occurrence of one or more trigger conditions. The trigger condition may be receipt of one or more instructions from one or more other computing devices, detection of potential unauthorized use by the computing device, normal operation of the computing device, and so on. The computing device may obtain biometric information and may store such biometric information. Such biometric information may be one or more fingerprints, one or more images of a current user of the computing device, video of the current user, audio of the environment of the computing device, forensic interface use information, and so on. The computing device may then provide the stored biometric information for identification of one or more unauthorized users.”

Knowing that your face and fingerprint might be captured by a stolen iPhone could be a strong deterrent for potential thieves. As always, it’s worth noting that Apple files hundreds of patents that never result in any tangible products or features, but this one seems like a no-brainer if Apple can make it work.

From the iPhone 7 to the Apple Watch 2, here’s everything we expect Apple to announce next week

By Gadget News | At 8:51 PM | Label : | 0 Comments

iPhone 7Image Source: Apple

Earlier today, Apple sent out official invitations for a special event set to take place on September 7 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. While Apple’s iPhone 7 will undoubtedly be the primary focus of the event, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see Apple take the opportunity to announce some other new products as well.

To help get you up to speed regarding what Apple likely has in store for us come September 7, we’ve put together a short but sweet summary highlighting all of the potential new products Apple may introduce to the world next week.

DON’T MISS: Big Pokemon Go update is about to bring some exciting new features

iPhone 7

This one is a no-brainer. Every September, the collective eyes of the tech world all hone in on Apple’s September media event to take a look at what type of new features the company’s next-gen iPhone brings to the table. With the iPhone 7, word is that we won’t see any groundbreaking new features, but that’s not to say that the iPhone 7 will be a ho-hum upgrade.

Of course, it goes without saying that the iPhone 7 won’t ship with a 3.5mm headphone jack. In turn, it will be interesting to see how Apple plans to handle audio for the device. While lightning-based audio will obviously be an option, some have speculated that Apple may ship wireless earbuds with each new iPhone 7 sold. We consider this unlikely but Apple certainly isn’t afraid of abandoning what it deems to be legacy technologies in favor of more advanced alternatives. To that end, we have seen reports that Apple has been working on advanced Bluetooth earbuds with custom radio chips designed for best-in-class battery life.

Headphone speculation aside, the iPhone 7 has a few other features worth mentioning. Aside from faster internals, it’s believed that advanced camera technology will be the key selling point of both the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 models. The iPhone 7 Plus in particular will reportedly be graced with a dual-camera system that should provide superior camera performance all across the board, including improved performance in low-light settings, improved color fidelity and much more. As for the 4.7-inch iPhone, it will likely boast a more advanced camera sensor along with an optical image stabilization feature that was previously only available on the iPhone 6s Plus.

One other tidbit worth noting is a rumor that the iPhone 7’s home button will be flush with the device and will not be a mechanical button as we’ve seen in years past. To that end, rumor has it that the iPhone 7 home button may utilize a series of sensors that will vibrate when pressed, thereby creating an illusion that the button can be depressed.

Other iPhone 7 rumors we’ve seen claim that the entry-level model will have 32GB of storage. On a related note, some sketchy reports have suggested we might even see a 256GB storage option on the iPhone 7.

Additionally, we’ve seen conflicting reports pointing to the addition of either a Blue or Space Black model to the iPhone 7 lineup.

Apple Watch 2

It’s been nearly 18 months since Apple rolled out the original Apple Watch and we’re certainly due for an upgrade, especially with the impending rollout of WatchOS 3. With the Apple Watch 2, which Apple will presumably want to roll out ahead of the holiday shopping season, we can expect to see faster internals, improved battery life and the addition of GPS functionality. Taken together, Apple’s next-gen Apple Watch may finally become the breakout hit that many initially anticipated the original would be.

MacBook Pro

Apple’s notebook line has been somewhat stagnant in recent months, but that may be about to change with the company’s next-gen MacBook Pro. We’ve seen conflicting rumors as to whether or not Apple plans to release a new MacBook Pro next week, but given what we’ve heard so far, we’re definitely going to keep our fingers crossed. Per the rumor mill, Apple’s next-gen MacBook Pro will feature an OLED touch panel and Touch ID functionality. Specifically, the OLED touch panel is said to replace the function key row and will feature options that will dynamically change depending on whatever app happens to be in use.

iOS 10/WatchOS 3 overview

Lastly, we can expect Apple to briefly provide us with an overview of iOS 10 and WatchOS 3. That said, it’ll be interesting to see if Apple announces any new updates to the software that it didn’t want to divulge at WWDC this past June.

Official Apple documentation reveals one fix for the iPhone 7’s headphone problem

By Gadget News | At 7:50 PM | Label : | 0 Comments
[ad_1]
iPhone 7 Headphones Jack Removed: AirPodsImage Source: iFeng

In case you didn’t know, Apple is going to kill the standard audio jack on the iPhone 7 – go grab your pitchfork. But how will it replace the 3.5mm headset port? How will it fix the problem it’s creating? After all, most of us already have at least one pair of regular wired headphones that will no longer work on a device that doesn’t have the audio jack, right?

DON’T MISS: We have some bad news about this year’s new Nexus phones

Many people think that Apple will either include wireless headphones in the iPhone 7 box (or AirPods), or include Lightning EarPods. Others believe that the company will bundle a 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter with the iPhone 7 so that you can keep using your current headphones with the new iPhone.

Apple obviously is not commenting on the matter just yet, but its actions speak louder than words — especially if we’re talking about filing official documentation with regulatory bodies.

Such Apple documents filed with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) on Monday, listing several unannounced products, including a couple of iPhone models, no less than 10 Apple Watch models, and a pair of never-before-seen “AirPods” wireless headphones. The EEC is the regulatory body that governs trademarks and patents, among other things, for Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

Credit: Apple Insider

Credit: Apple Insider

Discovered by Mobiltelefon.ru on Tuesday, the filings seem to indicate that Apple is indeed planning to launch wireless headphones in the future. It’s not clear whether they’ll be bundled with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, or whether they’ll be sold separately in Apple stores. The second possibility seems infinitely more likely, of course.

The filing also contains three wireless headphone models that will be sold under the Beats brand. The Apple A1778 and A1784 are two upcoming iPhones that will run iOS 10. These are the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, though it’s not clear which is which.

What’s puzzling about the listing is that it offers 10 distinct product names for upcoming Apple Watch models. Recent reports said that Apple will launch an Apple Watch 2 this fall, without specifying how many different models each watch family will have.

Apple’s fall event is scheduled for September 7th, at which point we should find out more details about the fate of our headphones.

You should be excited that Apple’s iPhone 7 is killing the headphone jack

Curved iPhone Liquidmetal Touch SurfacesImage Source: Mesut Designs

Plenty of people are complaining about Apple’s rumored decision to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 even before the device is announced. And there’s no question at all that the complaining will continue after the new iPhones debut next week. But the move makes perfect sense to anyone who has been following Apple’s iPhone closely. Now, a new Apple innovation further reinforces the idea that we should be extremely excited to see the 3.5mm headphone jack go away.

DON’T MISS: The latest evidence of a 256GB iPhone 7 comes directly from Apple

New technology described in an Apple patent application that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published on Tuesday would allow Apple to create touch-sensing display surfaces using Liquidmetal technology. How is that even remotely interesting beyond the fact that it contains the word “Liquidmetal”? And how is it related to the headphone jack?

Well, think about everything you may have heard about Apple’s future iPhone. It’s supposed to offer a curved edge display next year and possibly a wraparound screen in the future. The iPhone of the future will also lack physical buttons, including the home button, whose functionality will be handled by 3D Touch.

That means you could have a big-screen, bezel-free iPhone with curved edges and a touch-friendly back. Removing the headphone jack not only frees up space inside the phone for extra components and a bigger battery, but it also eliminates a point of entry for water. More importantly, it lets Apple increase the screen size without making the phone bigger.

It’s only a matter of time before battery charging will go wireless in iPhones as well, and when it does, Apple’s iPhone might not have any physical ports at all. Then we’d have the perfect iPhone. With no buttons and no ports, the phone would feature an amazing design.

The new patent at hand, first discovered by Apple Insider, doesn’t paint a picture of this future iPhone. But it offers one of the building blocks Apple needs to achieve it. Apple explains that the technology could become “a part of the touch sensing system that senses one or more touches on or near the display.”

“The present embodiments combine a number of unique features that allow for new applications not before possible,” Apple explains. “Because the touch sensor has very low power requirements, it is beneficial for use in battery operated or low power applications such as laptop, portable computers, and PDAs.” And yes, the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV are mentioned in the patent, by name. Again, the use of such a component in an iPhone that has a wraparound display with built-in buttons would make plenty of sense.

Just like any other Apple patent, this Liquidmetal innovation might not be found in commercial products anytime soon. But it certainly is an exciting invention, especially if you consider everything else Apple is rumored to be planning for future iPhone models.

Google Nexus 2016: Release Date Name

A few days ago, a report said that Google will discontinue the Nexus smartphone family starting this year, and replace it wit a brand new brand. New product name was not offered at the time for the brand new Google Phones, but a new report now says that Google settled on Pixel and Pixel XL for the HTC-made Sailfish and Marlin that we’ve seen in so many leaks.

DON’T MISS: Official: Samsung recalls Galaxy Note 7 worldwide, announces replacement program

According to Android Police, an accurate source of Android leaks, the new Google handsets have an October 4th release date, just as previously rumored. Google is supposedly holding a special media event for the day, with Pixel set to become the new name for Google Android products.

In addition to the Pixel and Pixel XL, Google is also expected to unveil a new 4K Chromecast device, Google Home, and an in-house design for a Daydream VR viewer device that may be known as the Daydream View.

Prices details for any of these new products have not been announced, but we already expect the new Nexus phones – or Pixel and Pixel XL – to be more expensive than last year’s Nexus handsets.

The Pixel phones will be available to buyers on October 4th, or shortly after that, and will run a Google-customized version of Android 7.0 Nougat.

Is Samsung cheating with its Galaxy Note 7 recall?

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Recall Sales IllegalImage Source: Zach Epstein, BGR

Many people have been quick to praise Samsung for owning up to a major Galaxy Note 7 flaw and issuing a global recall of the highly praised product. But Samsung isn’t following the proper recall protocol in the US, and consumer watchdog groups aren’t happy.

DON’T MISS: Leak: iPhone 7 will solve two of the three biggest problems with iPhones

Samsung is taking a financial hit that may amount to $1 billion, with many saying that what’s most important for the company is regaining the trust of the consumers, especially now with the iPhone 7 about to be released. Samsung said it will voluntary replace as many as 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units that were already shipped to retail partners and consumers. That means existing Galaxy Note 7 owners will not have to pay anything for the replacement.

However, Consumer Reports is raising awareness that Samsung isn’t going through the proper recall channels in the US. The consumer advocate group is calling for an official recall of the Galaxy Note 7. As it stands, the recall may have made the news around the world, but it’s not officially recognized by the US government. This allows stores to continue selling the Galaxy Note 7 even if it might be dangerous for customers.

An official recall, Consumer Reports explains, involves the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and would make phone sales illegal in the US. As of Friday morning, the Galaxy Note 7 was still available for sale at some retailers, the site noted.

An official recall would also include clear instructions for consumers. Samsung said that it will voluntarily replace sold Galaxy Note 7 units for new ones in the coming weeks, and you can learn how to trade in your old phone in this post.

An unnamed government official said there’s no official recall. A different government source told Recode that he or she would like “a more traditional recall announcement put in place.”

“Samsung should immediately initiate an official recall with the Consumer Product Safety Commission given the serious nature of the safety problem it identified with the Galaxy Note7,” Consumer Reports director of electronics testing Maria Rerecich said. “We are particularly concerned that phones continue to be available for sale today.”

Consumer Reports also pointed out to Samsung a few weeks ago that its Galaxy Note 7 isn’t waterproof, as advertised. The Korean giant then said it fixed the problem without explaining what models might be affected, and without extending warranties past the standard one-year period.

One good thing about the Galaxy Note 7 recall: cheap phones

By Gadget News | At 3:46 PM | Label : | 0 Comments

Galaxy Note 7 Recall DealsImage Source: Zach Epstein, BGR

Samsung had to recall some 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units after several handsets caught fire due to malfunctioning batteries. The company stopped sales in most markets except for China, and plans to replace every Galaxy Note 7, or refund you the money. This is where things get interesting, at least for those people who planned on buying the handset but didn’t do it on account of its prohibitive price.

DON’T MISS: How to tell if your Galaxy Note 7 might explode

You see, once Samsung fixes its mess, it’ll still have 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units that are almost functional — they only need battery replacements. It’s likely that Samsung won’t want to ditch that stock, and Business Korea speculates that Samsung is likely to sell them as refurbished devices.

Samsung wants to sell used handsets in the US, so it could definitely try to recoup some of its losses by including the recalled Galaxy Note 7 units in its program.

Samsung is yet to announce such a program, so don’t get too excited just yet. But what else will it do with the unexpected Galaxy Note 7 pileup?

The news site says that out of the 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units that are being recalled, some 1.4 million to 1.5 million have been shipped to consumers. These will probably be the cheapest refurbished Galaxy Note 7 versions that Samsung could sell.

That leaves up to 1.1 million units that have never been opened but need battery replacements. These devices could also be sold in Samsung’s refurbished smartphones store. They should be slightly more expensive than customer-used devices, but cheaper than the full $850 price you’d be paying on a brand new Galaxy Note 7.

Again, nothing is concrete at this point, and we’re only speculating here. We’ll have to wait a few more weeks for the faulty Galaxy Note 7 units to be replaced.

Either way, the ball is in your court on this one, Samsung.

iPhone 7 Details

We’re still waiting for the Apple event to start, but there’s really not much point left. Amazon just jumped the gun and temporarily put up its page for iPhone 7 accessories, in the process virtually confirming a bunch of details about the new iPhone.

The page is down now, but in the screenshots we managed to get while it was up, you can see a few key details. There’s two different models of iPhone, as expected. One has dual cameras on the back, while the other just has one. The prominent links to Bluetooth headphones is an obvious nod that the long-rumored removal of the headphone jack is also about to happen.

DON’T MISS: Apple’s big iPhone 7 event is about to start – here’s how to watch live

Other than confirming the double-camera rumors and strongly hinting that the headphone jack is about to vanish, we can also see the colors. Going by the case images, there’s a new jet black color, along with the already existing Space Grey and Rose Gold.

The final thing is a naming change. Amazon refers to the bigger iPhone as the iPhone 7+, rather than iPhone 7 Plus.

It’s unclear how much detail Amazon gets before the event from Apple. Given the company’s history of secrecy, and hiding details from case manufacturers, these images could well just be based on guesses. But if Amazon has a heads-up from Apple, which makes sense — the biggest retailer working with the biggest phone manufacturer! — this could be the first official look at the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Amazon has already taken the page down, but we have a bunch of screenshots from before that happened.

Why the iPhone 7’s camera is ‘the best smartphone camera ever’

Earlier today, Apple launched its iPhone 7 series, including the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The phones are no longer twin devices. A critical iPhone feature has been significantly improved: the camera. The camera in the iPhone 7 is better than any iPhone before it, according to Apple, and then comes the iPhone 7 Plus.

DON’T MISS: iPhone 7 release date announced: Preorders start Friday, release on September 16

One of the best new features of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cameras is the image signal processor (ISP) that Apple built into that powerful A10 Fusion chip. Whenever you take a photo or video, the ISP powers over 100 billion operations and uses deep machine learning (like recognizing humans in the pictures or video) to improve the shots. It automatically improves focus and white balance, and it delivers real-time bokeh effect to the phone’s screen (on the iPhone 7 Plus). The ISP produces instant results, needing only 25ms to set up your perfect shot, at least according to Apple.

The True Tone flash has also been improved. It’s 50% brighter and even more efficient than its predecessor. It’s now called Quad-LED True Tone flash and adjusts to the color temperature of the environment. It also has the capability to reduce flickering from artificial lighting.

The iSight camera on the 4.7-inch iPhone has a six-element lens and a 12-megapixel sensor. The camera now comes with optical image stabilization (OIS), just like all the iPhone Plus versions before. The OIS mechanism reduces motion and handshake and allows 3x longer exposures than the iPhone 6s.

A f/1.8 aperture that captures 50% more light means you’re going to get much better pictures and videos in low light conditions.

The phablet is going straight after DSLR cameras, and you’ll have a hard time ignoring its capabilities.

The iPhone 7 Plus has two 12-megapixel cameras. One is exactly similar to the iPhone 7’s. It’s a wide-angle camera that will take pictures just like the iPhone 7. The second camera is a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with the f/2.8 aperture that brings over optical zoom to the iPhone.

The telephoto lens also adds a depth-of-field effect to images, but it will only be activated via a software update set to be released at some point in the coming weeks. The depth-of-field feature, also known as bokeh will bring over a new portrait mode to the camera app for photos. What happens is that the ISP uses both cameras to make the subject look sharp, while blurring the background. This is the type of feature you’d see out of DSLR cameras.

The iPhone 7 Plus offers 2x optical zoom thanks to the dual-lens cameras and the ISP, while digital zoom goes all the way to 10x for photos and 6x for videos.

The selfie camera

The FaceTime camera on both iPhones got better as well. We’re looking at a 7-megapixel front camera with f/2.2 aperture that has auto image stabilization and does Full HD video recording.

What could you ask for more?

That the iPhone 7 had a dual-lens camera of its own, maybe? Guess we’ll have to start waiting for the iPhone 8 for that.
